THCA vs THC: What's the Difference?

As hemp-derived cannabinoids become more widely available, many consumers want to understand the difference between THCA and THC. While these compounds are closely related, they behave very differently depending on how they are consumed.

This guide explains the key differences between THCA and THC including potency, effects, legality, and how THCA converts into THC through heat.

What Is THCA?

THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in raw cannabis and hemp plants. In its natural form THCA is considered non-psychoactive.

When cannabis plants are harvested, the primary cannabinoid present in the flower is THCA rather than THC.

What Is THC?

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound responsible for the euphoric effects commonly associated with cannabis.

THC interacts with receptors in the body's endocannabinoid system which can influence mood, perception, relaxation, and sensory experience.

How THCA Converts Into THC

THCA converting into THC through decarboxylation when cannabis is heated

THCA converts into THC through a chemical process called decarboxylation.

This occurs when cannabis is exposed to heat through:

  • Smoking
  • Vaping
  • Cooking
  • Heating during extraction

During this process a carboxyl group is removed from THCA which transforms the molecule into THC.

THCA vs THC Effects

Because THCA is non-psychoactive in its raw form, the effects differ depending on whether the compound has been heated.

  • THCA: Non-intoxicating when raw
  • THC: Produces psychoactive effects
  • Heated THCA: Converts into THC and may produce similar effects

THCA vs THC Legality

The legality of THCA and THC differs depending on federal and state laws.

Hemp-derived THCA products are generally considered legal under the 2018 Farm Bill as long as they contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC.

However some states have adopted additional restrictions or evolving regulations around hemp-derived cannabinoids.
